Copyright Jennifer Rose Phillipoh wait, yeah its a bird. sort of :p Worked on this today taking a break from the foxgloves. Started to put the dark colours down on the top of her head. Just lots of light layers going in the same direction over and over again. Don't have to really worry about feather shapes on this part of her head as it looks really soft. Once I start on her body I need to pay more attention to the feathers, making sure they are drawn correctly and the right colour for where they are on her body.
Going to take time. Which is one of the main complaints I get when people talk to me about them using coloured pencils. That they can take forever!! Yes they can but there are little cheats such as solvents and using other media to put down base colours that can really speed up the process. But on the whole coloured pencils are not a fast material to use. And not one that you can just pick up and be a master at; yes there are people that do use coloured pencils for the first time and create wonderful pieces of art but on the whole and like most forms of art practice is everything.
Looks lovely. I have respect for coloured pencil artists as I have no patience with them:)

ReplyDeletei only use my derwent coloured pencils to splash some colour on my sketches but i have no clue on how to use them correctly to get realistic effects. while i'm much more at home with acrylic paints, i greatly admire the work of coloured pencil artists. i have a couple of books on coloured pencil art/lessons but, as yet, i've not managed the time to look into them further.
ReplyDeleteSo true, cp does take a lot of time and patience. But the slowness of drawing with cp is one of the reasons I like it. I find it very relaxing, sort of meditative. Unlike painting, which is very active. Plus I can leave a cp drawing for hours or days and then come back and work on it some more and nothing has happened, like paint drying out.

ReplyDeleteSerena- some of the books are better then others, there are a couple that I think are really over rated but everyone loves :/ I don't get it. I love seeing your acrylic work, its always wonderful :)

I have never used colour pencils except on my dolls. Haven't a clue how to do on paper.
