If you could be certain no one wrecked anything. And actually since almost the whole place is on a hill, someone might end up falling down the hill :p I guess it would work if a few people came as Jack and Jill. And it might be funny to watch someone bob for apples and try not to end up rolling down the hill with the bucket of apples following them. I do like that I can walk here in under 20 minutes. Its a nice little place to kill a few minutes.
There are so many graves here with wonderful carvings :) I really need to bring some paper and do some rubbings of them before you can't read them at all.
Or before they end up buried like a lot of them were.
There are a few graves from the 1700's. Probably more then we can read, since there are graves where the whole front has eroded or fallen off.
And this one is a tad creepy since the face of the angel has eroded, perfect for Halloween though :)
I find old graveyards interesting, too! What a pity some of these gravestones are deteriorating. I hope you'll do those rubbings!

ReplyDeleteI always think there is something about graveyeards. I find them incredibly peaceful and I love to read the stones...but,it has to be said it is a bit of a weird pastime ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have never seen graves like those one, the style of some of them are very particular. The one that called my attention was the 1796 grave, with the circle around the year, it looks very well preserved –only the upper part though. I bet the designer of that grave was well into Romanticism!! Talking about Halloween; I will never forget once of the times when I went to the States to visit my cousins in Cleveland –I was 14- and they took me and my sister to a cemetery –in the night, while it was closed- because they wanted to show us what people around there called the “wedding b***”: a woman that went to her husband’s grave every night dressed on her weeding dress. After entering two times and running out again as soon as we heard a noise or thought we saw something, the third time we went in with the car –through the side of the cemetery- and got to see her (to see her or a white piece of fluttering fabric, for immediately my cousin reversed the car, as we were all shouting). I had my first cigarette that night…I was sooooo scared and exited!!! I have to say, it was lot’s of fun!!!

I used to love grave yards as a child. A bunch of kids and I used to hang out on the large family graves and play crocodile crocodile can we cross your river. It all seems a bit disrespectful now I'm an adult.

sarah- not disrespectful, just kids being kids. and i think that as long as people of any age do not knock down or mark the graves, who ever is buried there would be fine with people enjoying life. unless of course they were a moaning grumpy prat when they were alive :p
ReplyDeletei like strolling through graveyards and reading the headstones...i only do it once in a blue moon though, usually if i'm there for the purpose of visiting a relative's grave. i like to wonder about the lives of those who died long ago. When we lived in Wyoming, we would come across graves from settlers which were designated as historical sites.
