Easily caught pigeon by fuzzydragons
Easily caught pigeon, a photo by fuzzydragons on Flickr.
We went out and I saw this pigeon sitting in one of the hedges, people and dogs walking within inches of it and it just sat there. Still there a few hours later, so phoned the SSPCA about it.

So now it is sitting in a tub covered with a sheet waiting to be picked up. It was caught way too easily to be 100% healthy and even if it is just exhausted and needs time to recover, it will be one less meal tonight for the neighbourhood cats.

    1. i couldn't leave it there to be a cats meal, too many cats around here that kill the birds :/

  2. Good on you! It looks like a very young bird, lots of downy bits and wing flight feathers very short. Has it been extra windy there? After a big wind here there are baby birds downed all over the place.

    1. the weather had been all right, not windy at all so it was odd to find sitting on the hedge.

  4. Good on you for helping this poor pigeon, Jennifer. I've done the same thing myself with plovers in our area. I hope the pigeon will be okay.

    1. he is being taken to a wildlife centre until he can fly :) lots of people are like its just a pigeon, not important, but i don't think that and it needed help

  6. Good news (I'm catching up on posts), glad you did the rescue. Sometimes fledgling birds have parents about but it sounds like this one didn't (and you did your homework about that).
I found a baby hawk once on a forest trail at dusk. That was a tough decision, as chances were it was a fledging with parents that would be coming around, but it was on a trail where people run their dogs of leash. I moved him away from the trail and left him...probably the right thing under those circumstances.
I always wonder about that 'it's just a pigeon attitude'. It implies there are so many of them, why should we care. You can take that further and remind them that there are 7 billion people, so why should we care... (erm, grumpy? Need coffee now)

    1. i haven't seen any nests or a lot of adult pigeons in the area, we get some in the back but i think with the road being so close in the front the birds avoid it, so had no idea how it got in the hedge. its good you moved the baby hawk off of the trail, doesn't need to be some dogs meal. i know animals get eaten but i have a problem when its a cat that kills something, since they don't need to be out(and often are not spayed) and are killing the wildlife in the area.
to me its an animal, doesn't matter pigeon or dog, if it needs help I will try to help it. some people don't get that :/ and when people do ask me why i don't wont kids after finding out i don't want any, (and wont take I just don't want them for an answer), i say there are already way too many people on the planet, it doesn't need anymore
