Etching Tool

So Julie asked me in a comment on the last post what I am using to etch and I can't remember if I mentioned that before. This is a metal scriber that I had John grind the ends down and then temper one end. It keeps a sharp point for a long time, as the many stab marks on my fingers show :p

And the owl at the moment. I wanted to have more finished, but its a little dangerous using the above tool when you have a coughing fit :p

  3. Yes, art can be dangerous! LOL! I stabbed myself with a inked stick pen nib once. Ended up with a single dot tattoo.
    The owl is coming along....

    1. you could be a pointillism tattoo artist :D

I did that with a pencil and still have the lead in my hand 20+ years later :p

  4. Correct name for it...Engineer's Scriber

I cut the hooked end off with an angle grinder, then used a bench grinder (though a grinding disc/flap disc in an angle grinder does the same thing) to put a point on it

Then to restore the temper I used a little blow torch to heat the end up (a little too far though, should have been a yellow colour, I took it up to blue...which is too high, but on plastic its not crucial

  5. Puts a whole new spin on dangerous art. Hmmm... I almost slice the tip of my finger off while cutting paper with an exacto knife...
Great owl etching. You really do suffer for your art, tho, don't you?
